In this Community Living Room series, we will engage with “I Won’t Vote” (1956) by W.E.B. Du Bois, “The Ballot or the Bullet” (1964) by Malcolm X, “Give Us the Ballot” (1957) by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and Fannie Lou Hamer’s (1964) powerful testimony from “Freedom Summer.”
Together, we will grapple with the historic fight for Black electoral justice, the enduring power of the Black vote, and the difficult task of staying politically engaged. How do we sharpen our consciousness around these themes and understand voting in what Saidiya Hartman calls the afterlife of slavery?
